Description: 1930 BMW R57: A Classic from the Pre-War Era In the expansive collections of pre-war BMW motorcycles - such as those housed in the BMW Museum in Munich - the 1930 BMW R57 represents a pivotal piece of early Bavarian engineering. Produced during a time when BMW was solidifying its reputation in the motorcycle world, this model exemplifies the brand's commitment to reliable, sporty two-wheelers. With only around 1,000 units manufactured between 1928 and 1930, the R57 is a rare find, often spotlighted in museum exhibits and collector circles for its blend of simplicity and performance. The BMW R57 was introduced in 1928 as a successor to the R47 in the 500cc sports category, marking an evolutionary step rather than a revolutionary overhaul. It built on BMW's foundational flat-twin boxer engine design, which debuted with the 1923 R32, emphasizing durability and balance. At the heart of the R57 is a 494cc air-cooled, four-stroke flat-twin boxer engine, delivering 18 horsepower at 4,000 rpm. 3-speed manual gearbox with a dry single-plate clutch, allowing for a top speed of approximately 115 km/h (about 71 mph). What sets the R57 apart in pre-war collections is its understated refinements: the engine-side carburetor placement for better airflow and the beefed-up front brake for enhanced safety. Controls reflect its vintage charm, including a tank-mounted shifter and throttle lever. Its rarity makes it a cornerstone for collectors, embodying the transition from basic transport to sporting machines in BMW's storied history.
